You can't get a job to utter the words "Would you like fries with that?" Man, your life must suck!
You could always try a hospital or school cafeteria. In the meantime, practice and improve your culinary skills. A degree simply means you've met that school's minimum qualifications. Thing is, there's often a disparity between the kind of skills you learn at school and the kind of skills required to be effective at a job. That's why most employers look for experience. The economy is bad, so there are few entry-level positions available. Find whatever work you can, and try back later.
It's because you're over qualified not necessarily just because of the state of our economy.
I agree with this. Burger King isn't going to hire someone with a culinary school degree to do something they can get a high school sophomore to do for minimum wage. If you have a degree, they have to pay you more (it's a legal thing... it doesn't matter whether you're willing to work for less or not). Since they can get someone to do the work for less, that's what they do. It's the same reason they always say you should get some real-world work experience before getting a master's degree. Because, by the time you have said master's degree, it's likely that people won't want you without experience, and you can't get a crappier job because they have to pay you equivalent to what someone with a master's degree is supposed to earn. Vicious circle, dude. Keep at it, and you'll find something.
The solution is simple. Apply to a different Burger King but don't mention your degree on your resume. They're not going to look that up.
restaurants are required to keep all applications for 30 days then are required to send them to corporate. they don't have to look it up but if they find certain things changed and you got the job you could be fired for lying on and application. i've seen stuff like that happen many times
do you have relavent work experience?
GrkGrl, you pre-empted my thought xD yeah, I think the op is overqualified. employers don't want to hire someone who can definitely jump at the first opportunity for something better. it's just how the working world works (pun?) what's happened to FML lately? it's been ages since I've seen a thread where the op wasn't maliciously and mercilessly attacked for various reasons. maybe that's why the FMLs are so lame lately: I really wouldn't be excited to post anything unusual either.
Ok so, I went to culinary school, I have worked in the food industry for 10 years and i made an account just to talk shit to everyone who thinks that a 4 year old can work at a burger king, I want to see you guys faces with 10 cars in line, 10 people waiting at the counter for food and see how you guys handle it. It isn't the hardest job in the world but I bet that most people can;t handle it at all. Becoming a chef isnt just going to school, it is working in the industry for YEARS!! no matter how hard you work nothing is good enough. As soon as all u assholes work in a restuarant behind a line being yelled at by other cooks, waitresses, and you boss then you can talk shit; until then learn to keep your mouth shut about things you don't know!!
Just lower your standards and expectations. Like move to New Jersey, and deliver pizza.

It has nothing to do with you or your degree, it's the economy. I've seen so many FML's that say "I have ___ degree and got turned down by ___ FML" It sucks, and FYL, but...we're all going through it.
It takes a lot to make an Angry Chicken. You have no idea, sir or madam.
