My ex proposed after I dumped his sorry ass. All those years he kept saying "I'm not ready.." and "I don't think I'm the marrying kind.." It gave me time to cool off and think about it and realise that I never really liked him anyway. Haha! Too bad, so sad. FYL because you probably had the best intentions. YDI for not making her feel special enough.

Not all women tell the truth when they claim they'll say yes. It's a sad day when the question is finally popped and the man gets a big fat NO straight up. Maybe OP didn't have the money for marriage yet. Maybe OP wanted to get the best engagement ring he could for her. Maybe OP wanted to plan everything out first so things wouldn't get complicated. There's a lot of reasons why OP could have taken 'years' to propose. I know I'm willing to say yes to my boyfriend the moment he proposes, no matter how long it takes (especially in this economy). Be it something elaborate, planned out, and well executed, or even just the simple question itself with a toy ring. I'd say yet because I love him and no one else. Not everyone's like that though. Sorry OP.

maybe the proposal wasn't as she imagined it or it seemed like you were only marrying her because she wanted you to or she couldn't understand your intentions... talk to her about it to find out why she said no :) i hope everything goes well for you X)

How sad, even if you did take awhile. Are you still with her? I always wonder what happens to couples after a proposal is turned down....

I'd say he might have caught her off guard... which is weird but when you think about it , if you're not in the right state of mind you could say no. For example, middle of an argument, or just got over an argument? As much as you love someone it would be hard to say yes then. Etc.
