Today, after receiving a message about being hired at a retail store, I went to the orientation for new employees. The trainer seemed perplexed when I told him my name, but he gave me my paperwork and continued with training. At the end of the 8 hour day, he asked to talk to me. I wasn't actually hired. FML

That was very unprofessional of them.

Isn't there some way you can force them to compensate you for your time? There should be, because that's just ******. Don't you usually check up on that stuff right away?

You should be compensated. It's not your fault that they don't have their business together.

He might as well have hired you if you sat through the 8 hour day and had you fill out paper work.

They should compensate you for the day.

This happened to me once. They "hired" me and told me that training started in one week. I showed up for orientation, then at the end of a 12 hour shift I was told I wasn't hired and they forgot to tell me when I got there. They refused to pay me for working the floor for an agonizing 12 hours. I was only 16 and too stupid to realize I could have fought them legally over it...

Why did he not simply tell you that when you gave him your name? Making you stay and do the paperwork if you weren't going to actually be working there was a pretty unprofessional move, and unfair to you as you could have used that time for something else otherwise.
