Today, an old lady walked up to my car on a busy street and banged on my window. She was annoyed because I was making a left, as opposed to continuing to drive when there was no traffic in front of me. She then got in her car and held the horn until I went. FML

deebroooo tells us more.

A street that didn't have a specific turning lane. And to clarify my blinker was on. Took awhile to turn because there was a lot of cars coming toward so I was there a while.

Was this a single lane street? How long were you waiting for? It had to be awhile of an old lady had time to park, talk to you, get back in her car and honk her horn. This FML feels incomplete in my opinion.

I'm sure other people realized you were in the right in this situation. If anything, people probably just remember a crazy old lady laying on her horn and not you.

If an old lady is teaching you how to drive you might've done something wrong...

At the moment of writing this. This person here is the only top comment that I've seen with a thumbs down.

The old lady was most probably in the wrong if there were several lanes. She got stuck behind OP and couldn't get out to the middle or right lane. It was her fault for not staying on her correct lane. Some people think they own the road...

She's wrong no matter what People are allowed to turn left in one lane streets too And if it holds up traffic, then oh well, they need to turn left

Yeah because all old people are excellent drivers right?

The old lady was wrong anyway. You're not supposed to get out of your car in the middle of traffic.

.... What's her point of doing this? She could've just went her way.

She couldn't because she was stuck behind him

Right. Because of course, she is concerned with public safety and wants to be sure you didnt do anything dangerous, so she ******* got out of her car and yelled at you, then held down the horn on a public roadway. Jesus ******* christ...

If the left turn lane is full, you can't block traffic by staying in the straight lane I'm also a California driver and I see that happen way too much

It sounds as if, like another comment says, this was a single lane 4-way, with the op turning while other cars has the right of way as opposed to going straight.

There are almost no streets like that in California that aren't residential. Seems incomplete but I'm guessing this person just didn't want to give up on trying to make his left turn

Please go and retake a drivers test, you need one

There are a lot of streets where I live that just don't have turn lanes. In that case when you have to wait for oncoming traffic to stop so you can turn left, people will get stuck behind you and they just have to wait or go around you if there's another lane. It sucks, but it's not the person's fault that they need to turn left.

13 has apparently never been to Los Angeles, where left-hand turn lanes are few and far between.

13 has also never driven in San Diego County, where the major surface streets also have haphazardly assigned turn lanes.

just because the location tag says California doesn't mean the incident happened in California.

OK, I'll admit I'm Australian but this seemed weird to me so I checked the road rules. nothing about "blocking traffic" to be found. single lane, multi-lane.... seems legal to me https://www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/dmv/detail/pubs/hdbk/turns

As a Californian who has lived in both north and south, I can say that that is complete jumpsuit. I've seen assigned turn lanes everywhere as well as unassigned. You must not be paying attention when driving.

To clarify, I think what 9 is referring to about blocking traffic is when too many cars are in the left-hand turn lane and the overflow impedes the traffic going straight through the light. While that happens, and can be annoying if you're unable to go around the overflow, it's certainly not illegal, nor is it avoidable. That's why on many main streets in LA, you can't make a left turn during rush hour—it can seriously block traffic. However, the comment for 13 is ridiculous. There are many streets in Southern California (I can only speak for LA and San Diego, where I've lived) that don't have left hand turn lanes.

Nor should he have. He is entitled to make a left.

I can't picture this one - if there's no traffic in front of op why can't they make the turn? Also, how "busy" is a street if there's no traffic?

I'm guessing OP couldn't make a left because there was on-coming traffic, so OP (and everyone behind OP) had to wait.

It makes sense to me. If there's no traffic in front of OP going straight and OP is waiting to make a left turn, then I don't see why this lady couldn't just move out. Another situation could be that it was at signal and there was a red arrow making it illegal to go because running red lights is illegal to begin with. This old lady just sounds impatient. I would have gotten her plates and reported her to the cops for road rage.

Ah, I see. I read the "no traffic in front" part as none at all, rather than just on their side of the road. My bad.

I know your pain OP. I have a busy street close to my house with a similar setup that completely holds up traffic if you have to turn left. which sucks even more if the drivers behind you don't know this and give you death glares as they pass.

how would people not know someone is trying to turn left. do you guys not signal in America?

Show it anyway

Oh they know you're turning, they just get pissy because you held them up. And yes Americans use turn signals, just not nearly as much as we should.

Well we Americans are supposed to use our turn signals but it seems that 90% of us have forgotten how

megs925 16

In my case, the person behind you knows you're turning..it's the people behind THAT person that can't see your turn signal. So to them it looks like I'm just holding up traffic when in actuality, they can switch lanes.

The only time I see people not use turn signals is on those really dull turns that aren't really turning just slightly adjusting your course

why didn't she just go around? if I was op I wouldn't have moved an inch.

I don't know whether it counts as such in California, but where I live little bitchy granny would have gotten a ticket for reckless driving. Either way, her mindset here is hilarious. "l know, I'll hold up traffic MORE by walking over and harassing her, and then walking back to my car. That'll teach her!"

The wording of this one is a bit confusing. She was mad at you because you just happened to be turning when she wanted to go straight? Some people are entirely too petty.
