Today, as a bartender was carding my friends, I excitedly asked if he was going to card me. The guy gave me a blank stare before finally replying, "Look, lady, I don't have time to stroke some middle-aged woman's ego." I asked because it was my birthday. I just turned twenty-one. FML

#70. FYL for thinking a movie is an accurate depiction of reality. #74. How can you imply that being a waitress is easy when you were complaining about how hard your job is as a bartender? Do you not realize that, essentially, they do exactly the same thing?

Woow - It amazes me that you all can get so frustrated and defensive over a debate on FML.com! My opinion - that was poor service. It doesn't matter how hard your job is, or how busy you are. If you're in the service industry then it's part of your job to be polite. Just because you're busy doesn't mean you have to be rude. If you're so stressed that you're snapping at customers, then maybe it's time for a job change. In the time it took to say that, the bartender could have served other drinks. A simple "no" would have sufficed.

clearly if youre asking him if he wants to check your id youre going to be overage, so why would he bother?

That totally happened to me on my 21st too! I pulled out my ID and the waitress said, "oh I don't have to see that." but then turned to my friend who is six days younger than me and said, "if you'll be drinking though I will need to see your ID."

People! Someone doesn't need to use too much makeup or be a long-time drunk to look a whole lot older than they are. Thats unfair! You're completely forgetting about amphetamine abuse!

A couple things: As someone who currently bartends and waits tables, but has also worked 'real' jobs: Marketing, advertising, event planning, etc. -- I must say that bartending is far more difficult than any of the others. It's a tough, busy, high-stress job. No, I can't compare it to law or medicine, but that doesn't make it 'easy'. Furthermore, the bartender still should have never said that. I can't imagine ever saying anything close to that, and I would never go to a bar that felt it appropriate to treat customers that way, and I recommend you never go back. Sorry you had to deal with that on your 21st.

i'm sure you don't look like a middle-aged woman and this guy is just a jerk. i can't believe he would day that to a customer! happy 21st!
