Today, as a bartender was carding my friends, I excitedly asked if he was going to card me. The guy gave me a blank stare before finally replying, "Look, lady, I don't have time to stroke some middle-aged woman's ego." I asked because it was my birthday. I just turned twenty-one. FML

Did you tell him it was your 21st bday and then hand him your ID to prove it? What a jackass... Aren't bartender's usually nice and flirty so they'll get good tips?!

He was definitely out of line. Bartenders are supposed to be friendly. Not rude and unprofessional. #39. Stop complaining. Do you even know why you get paid so little by the hour? Because you can make a ridiculous amount of money in tips (on a good night) So seriously. Shut up. There are people around the world who get paid a lot less for doing a lot more work than you.

This seems very fake. Either that or you are aging way more that you should be...do you smoke? It's not only bad for your health and everyone's around you but it kills your looks as well.

#39 that not under minimum wage because if you get tipped your minimum wage is lower that those that don't get tipped. Quit being whiney.

I absolutely love how people who aren't I.T.B. (In the Biz) have no idea what they are talking about. Ever seen the movie Waiting? Watch it again and then come into a bar or restaurant with your ******* yuppy attitude.

I can tell that a lot of you don't go out to bars much, or at least not busy ones. Bartending is not some glamorous job where they suck up to the customers for tips; their goal is to get you your alcohol as quickly as possible. Being chatty and friendly is not conducive to accomplishing that goal, as other people waiting for their alcohol quickly get pissed off. Life isn't always nice; learn to cope, and if you can't cope, go to the bar.

#59: I said one of the easiest, not easiest. And yes, compared to medicine, law, research, education, construction, waitressing, etc., I think bartending is much easier. You're right, bartenders do have to "be able to have the personality to go to every person at the bar you work at and make sure all 20-30 people are happy"--that's in the job description. If you can't do that, like the bartender mentioned by the OP, you shouldn't be a bartender.

#74, you contradict yourself in your post. You say you think bartending is an easy job, then go on to state that if someone cannot handle a number of rather difficult tasks in bartending's job description, they shouldn't be doing said easy job. That, and to throw waitressing in the list of difficult jobs along with medicine and law is just laughable.
