Today, at work, a customer asked me to unlock the restroom for them. I honestly couldn't figure out which gender they were, but I didn't want to be rude and ask, so I took a chance. I unlocked the wrong one. FML

Couple of things. I couldn't have unlocked both, as the doors swing shut and relock as soon as you let them go. The customer was a natural born woman who looked and sounded a lot like a male. When they asked why I opened the men's, I just told them the women's was occupied. I have never made the mistake before and it was mortifying. She luckily was very cool about it:) also, both restrooms use the same key.

I would have pretended I unlocked the wrong one without realizing it. Like "oh it's been a long day I wasn't even paying attention to which bathroom I was unlocking!"

Could've just asked them for which one and when they get pissed that u asked just play it off that I don't know if it's for them or if they asking for someone else

Had a similar incident. We had a referee for a basketball game that the middle school where I work at played. Myself and the rest of the administration spent both boys and girls games trying to figure out if they were a man or woman. Well our boys coach called them "sir" then "ma'am", and the referee said that he had it right the first time. We still weren't convinced. What convinced us what when I went to the bathroom after the game, they were right behind me going into the men's room.

The way somebody dresses and/or acts does not dictate what gender they are, nor should it influence the way they are treated.

You should've tried to play it off and unlock the other one and say that both of them should always be unlocked.

Don't feel bad. There are lots of androgynous people out there. They must get that often I'm sure. Too bad there couldn't be a third bathroom that would be safe.
