agreed.
i hate the steriotype that those that don't drink don't have as much fun... i overheard my sister-in-law saying she didn't want me to go out with them to the club because i wouldn't be fun... i am way more off the chain (wow, that sounded lame though) than the typical drunk, and i don't end up acting like an asshole at the end of the night when everyone else is beyond f'ed up...
Tell them that the depression caused by working on Christmas will drive you to drink. Optionally, you could point out that money may have a mitigating effect.
Isn't Christmas Day a public holiday in most western countries? I didn't think most companies can force you to work on a public holiday.
For those of you saying that the OP should sue for discrimination, I highly doubt that there is anything in British law that states that making someone work because they don't drink is covered under anti-discrimination laws. I have a feeling, considering he used a social label to describe his non-drinking, that it is a personal choice. And since employers are allowed to discriminate against MOST other personal choices, ie visible tattoos, facial piercings, hair color, etc, then his boss was not in the wrong in scheduling him for working on Christmas. Personally, I think that following a religion/spirituality is a personal choice and should not be covered under discrimination laws. And OP, please get over it. Maybe the other employees are having a party on Christmas Eve and your boss didn't want to schedule them because of the state they might be in the next morning. If your place of business isn't closed on Christmas, than s/he wants someone competent working. At my last job, when my boss was having a party, he would usually schedule the people he knew was coming for late morning or afternoon shifts the next day or give us the day off. The people he didn't like, weren't invited, or didn't drink were scheduled for morning shifts on the weekends. Is it necessarily fair? No, no really. But who said life was fair?
Your boss is as much of a douchebag as the OP's boss. Doesn't make his actions right and it doesn't mean the OP should just roll over and take it.
I hardly think that he was a douchebag. He just knew who wasn't going to be in any shape to work and do a good job during morning shifts after a party, and didn't schedule them. Shit, whenever he got mad at me, he would make sure I was working an opening shift the morning after we went to a party, just so he could torment me for the day. It was mean. He didn't only pick on the ones who went out to play. And his boss might not be using fairest criteria to determine who is working on Christmas, but the point is that someone has to go into work. And I highly doubt that the OP is going to be the only one there.
Or those who are scheduled the next morning and do drink can be, I don't know, responsible adults and not get drunk and hungover? I mean that is a personal choice too. If they come into work the next day in an unfit state then write their asses up, simple.
This is why I would always end up working the day after any major holiday. I always hated it. Why should I be punished because my co-workers can't be responsible?
Just call in sick. That took me 2 seconds to think of and if they want proof just fake the doctors slip.
Ok, so our body produces some type of "alcohol" Mainly known as endorphines. Endorphines dont give you a hangover from hell though. Don't bash the guy because it is preference not to drink, there is nothing clinically wrong with that. If he can have a good time without it, what is the need? None. why spend the money on something that you dont need.

Tee-total means that you do not drink alcohol. Ever. FYL for having a crappy work enviroment. Get it in writing and then take it up with higher management . . . Personally I think you should get extra time off for not wasting company time with hangovers like the others!
what's tee-total?
