Baby, I don't tip at Subway, but it has nothing to do with whether or not the "sandwich artist" is pathetic. I don't tip at McDonald's either. I don't tip for fast food. I tip waiters because they make $2.13/hour plus tips. You make minimum wage (at least). Why not look for a better job? Maybe one where you could be more active and lose the weight. I've lost 20 pounds just by tracking calories at Livestrong(dot)com. It's great! Sparkpeople(dot)com has a good tracking tool, too. You don't have to stay unhappy. Don't let anyone else dictate your self-worth!
Are you working in a Subway RESTARAUNT? If so, don't expect to be tipped. You do not provide a service. These tip jars everywhere these days piss me off. YOU DO get a wage working there. Stop pan-handling to customers. I tip waiters/waitresses, bartenders and coat check people, hair stylists, etc. People in the SERVICE industry. Which you are not.
You should not have a "tip jar" at a Subway. That's ridiculous. The reasoning behind waitresses and bartendars getting a tips is because they only get paid $2.36 an hour and the tips are supposed to make up for that extra $4.14 to equal minimum wage (which by the way is $6.50). I know this because I am a bartendar. We live off of tips not min. wage. So to the Subway employee, don't be a d***, you're already getting paid the full minimum wage, get a better education and/or job. That is so frustrating. You do not deserve a tip for making a sandwhich, you're already getting more than other people in the food & beverage industry.
minimum wage is different in every state, it's not $6.50 everywhere.
Yep, minimum wage is $8.50 here. Minimum wage for servers (since I am one) here is $4.90. It is different depending on the state/country/whatever. Oh, and I agree . . Subway, McDonald's, etc should NOT have a tip jar. You already make minimum wage. And, working at a McDonald's or Subway, that's really all you deserve to make.
if you were really a bartender, you would know how to spell "bartender." that aside, from someone who spent 5 years as a tipped restaurant employee, i agree with you. i don't tip these idiots at dunkin donuts or subway. f them. you're not running around like a crazy person, waiting on 5 tables at a time, entertaining crying children, tending to assholes who to complain that their medium steak is one shade of red overcooked, or refilling sodas for an hour straight. you filled my orders, ONE time, then moved on to the next person. sorry, you didn't earn a tip.
Why do you have a tip jar? I usually see a charity jar at certain places.
^^ Straight up work of art.
Subway can't be compared to other fast food restaurants. Sure, it is technically fast food, but the amount of customization a Subway employee has to deal with is downright ludicrous. Customers expect Subway employees to deal with all of their stupid little eccentricities, cutting jalapenos in half, adding four to five times the amounts of specific ingredients (without expecting to pay), covering the sandwich in mayonnaise and vinegar right after the bread is opened, all while juggling the entire restaurant alone or with just one other person. Bottom line, McDonald's won't do that crap. Nor will Burger King. Subway employees will listen to that horse shit, and be required (in most cases) to entertain the customer with their dumb ass ideas of good food. For that, they deserve tips. And all of you motherfuckers that say otherwise should be ashamed. Don't think they deserve it? Don't tip. But don't take a shit on the notion because you think they don't have the right.
"And all of you motherfuckers that say otherwise should be ashamed." 1. Cry me a river. 2. No, I shouldn't feel ashamed because, you see, I actually know what I'm talking about. I used to make sandwiches at a local deli when I was in high school, and it's not that hard (even when it's busy). You get the hang of it after a day or two; custom orders aren't that much more difficult to make than the "regulars." Oh, and we never expected/got tips; that was back when minimum wage was much lower than it is now, too.
"Custom orders" is not what I am talking about here. Every Subway sandwich ordered is a custom order. I am talking about the people who go above and beyond what is normal or expected. Those customers are essentially insulting the employees by giving out all of these oddball requests, and becoming angry if the person does not follow through. I couldn't care less about your sandwich shop experience. A locally-owned restaurant is nothing compared to a huge multi-national fast food chain. For having to put up with the absolute worst fast-food customers in the world, Subway employees should AT LEAST have a tip jar.
Wow, so his/hers experience doesn't count for anything whilst yours is gospel? Get the **** over yourself and your lack of tip jar.
@52: Uh, no; try reading better. I didn't work at a restaurant; I worked at a deli, where we dealt with all kinds of people, both good and bad. If they made weird requests, you made it for them anyway. That being said, how the hell does Subway being a national franchise bolster the argument that they should have a tip jar? You grab the bread, slather some mayo on it, then meat/cheese/vegetables, then oil/spices: it's NOT THAT HARD...you don't deserve a tip for performing a task that the customer basically walks you through ONE STEP AT A TIME. That being said, if you don't like your job at Subway, go be a waiter/bartender if you think you deserve to be tipped for your work.
You think the customer walks the employee through the whole process? You are entirely mistaken! The customers can't distinguish their asses from their faces. Even with each individual step in the process being printed and numbered on the sneeze guard, customers think its "they put whatever I want on however I want it on in whatever order I want it on." The customers make the job 10 times harder than it should be. That is my point. And for dealing with their BS, they deserve a tip jar. Again, if no one wants to tip, fine. But they should be allowed the luxury.
Subway can't be compared to other fast food restaurants, but then again, subway can't be compaired to a "restaurant" either. Subway is where you go to get a sandwhich, and now a wrap and a crappy pizza too, but still. I go into a "sandwhich shop" which is what Subway is, and especially one that advertises that I can get a sandwich the way I want it ... and if I want my tomatos, or onions, or jalapenos, or whatevers cut in half, then that is just doing what you advertise that you do......don't expect people to pay you extra for stuff that you are supposed to do. You are not a "sandwich technician", I tell you what I want and how I want it and you do it, if you don't, I complain and you get fired. You are a glorified middle school kitchen lady. Get over it and do your job, collect your paycheck (take down the tip jar because it shouldn't be up there anyway), and wait til you can get a better job....
Rofl AlanShore. Your mean-hearted nature is sure to get you stabbed several times over the course of your life. I feel sorry for you. And no, it is not the job of a sandwich artist to cut that shit in half. They are actually are actually told not to. It's people like you, AlanShore, that are the reason why people think they can get shit done however they want. Its wrong. Any Subway employee that puts up with that kind of nonsense is merely trying to get you the hell out of the store to minimize how much of your horse shit they will have to deal with. There are rules and guides on how to build sandwiches, guides they are not supposed to stray from. When they do (which is much too often), it is usually only to satiate rude customers like yourself.
In their advertisements, they specifically show that you can get your sandwich however you want. So asking Subway workers to do their job is not "insulting" them. Okay?
Be extra nice...ppl will b more generous and you will B less pathetic.
if you worked at quiznos this wouldn't be a problem

trust me, it didn't work
Your reasoning behind doing it is pretty sad. But putting a dollar or two in before you start your shift usually helps people tip a little bit more on a slow night (which is why I did it when working at certain establishments).
