That's actually a good idea. When people see more cash in a tip jar, they're more inclined to tip. I've learned this method in my own place of employment

When I worked coat check I always put my own money in the jar first. I made sure to put in loonies and toonies to encourage patrons to put in similar coins in rather than smaller change. And it definitely worked. So OP I hope it worked for you.

Your reasoning behind doing it is pretty sad. But putting a dollar or two in before you start your shift usually helps people tip a little bit more on a slow night (which is why I did it when working at certain establishments).
