I don't think the issue here is that she has to pay for it herself, it's that her mother responded like saving money for her child's education was an absolutely absurd thing to do, and that no one in their right mind would ever do that. Why would a parent not want to help their child? If they weren't going to pay for her to go to college, her parents should have talked to her a long time ago, and should be helping her find the financial aid she will need. I truly feel sorry for you. That was just rude of her to say. Your mother should have at least told you in advance that you would have to take on the cost of college yourself, instead of being a bitch.
Also, #30, you are a jerk. No one should be denied the opportunity to go to college. If you are accepted, it is your RIGHT to attend that school. Her mother responded in the most hurtful way that I can possibly think of. Keep your nasty comments to yourself.
Going to school is definitely a privilege. There are very few things which are actually "rights," most things you have to work for. It's called being an adult. Life isn't handed to you, nor should it be.
I could go on a really long rant on this but let's just say I shared the same situation. I'm on student loans and a few scholarships right now...one thing I got though is that I never came from a "rich" family...yet evidently not poor enough to get more aid. lol
I'm in the same exact boat, my parents make enough money that I can't get much financial aide but not enough to help me though. they're being gracious enough to let me live at home during school and with my grades I have some pretty good scholarships. Still working two jobs during the summer to get some savings while paying interest on my loans.
Hahaha. My dad isn't paying for me to go to university. In fact, pretty much everyone in my country saves up themselves...
My parents didn't put aside money for me and trust me they ain't paying for it... if anything they might give me gas money for the drive but that is prolly it... It is going to be a bitch to work for $40, 000 worth of schooling...
But had your parents paid for it, they would have worked for $40,000 worth of schooling that wasn't even theirs. How is that fair?
They could gain themselves a child who doesn't ditch them into a retirement home when they become too old to take care of themselves. After all, someone who works in retail all their life isn't very likely to be able to provide for their parents. Same with a person who had to live in debt and stress and ends up quitting because they are trying to work and do intensive schooling at the same time. A child who has a nice job and can provide them with good care, grandchildren, and a good relationship for the rest of their lives- wouldn't that be worth a year of pay?
LMAO YDI for being dummm............rag gshfh
PROOF HER WRONG!
To be honest i've never heard of any parents ever paying for college.

#5 and #6 seriously, if you are that judgemental about people who's parents paid for their college, clearly you didn't learn much either. If you are lucky enough to have your parents pay for your education, which often you'll find they are happy to do for you, why on earth would you turn it down? Learning about how to cope with money starts with understanding when to seize opportunities that keep you out of debt. It's just ignorant to generalise and say that they are all spoilt and unable to cope with money. A lot of people who pay for their own education live at home, that doesn't necessarily imply that they can't live on their own or manage a budget. So think a little before you call them "rich brats", some of them are just well off, or have very generous parents.
Wow, I'm sorry. This makes me appreciate my parents' frugal ways during my childhood.
