It's actually a sign that your cat loves and cares for you. He was just trying to provide you with food. He didn't know any better, he's just a cat.

Hopefully you had someone watching the cat, in which case FYL for having a friend who left them there. However, if you left your cat to fend for itself then YDI; it was probably just stockpiling so it could eat while you were gone.
