Doesn't really sound like depression. Especially because they uses the word "forced". When you're depressed to the point that you're feeling so lethargic you don't have the energy to take care of yourself, you also don't have the energy to fight people who are taking care of you. By the sound of it OP's husband was being just being an ass.

I think we can all pretty much agree that not showering daily is pretty disgusting, especially if the person has been sweating. I don't understand how people think showering is some sort of hard chore or whatever they think. One of my brother-in-laws is like this, he thinks showering is a huge chore. The worst thing about it is, you can really smell him a mile away and his parents have a hard time getting his 19 year old behind up and cleaned, or even dressed. Op, just invite him into the shower to get him interested and help him clean up. Once you get the ball rolling, hopefully he'll understand thay showering equals some fun time and that it's nice to be clean.
