Today, I can't get my heat to turn off. It is currently 87 degrees Fahrenheit in my house, and my heat is running non-stop. It's about 20 degrees outside with over a foot of snow on the ground, so a repairman can't come out to fix it. My electricity bill will be about $1000. FML

Why can't they come fix it? It's called an emergency call, that's what they do. I can't believe a foot of snow is stopping any legitimate HVAC repairman from coming to your house. I would try calling someone else.

Open a window, that'll at least make it more comfortable.

Most ac and heating units have a separate circuit to the unit only and clearly labeled. Open your breaker box and kill the power by flipping the breaker. Easy fix

lol, just turn off the electricity?

I'm an electricial in the US. The Nation Electrical Code requires an emergency shut off switch for electrical furnaces. Its usually at the top of the stairs to the basement, if you have one, and easy to spot because the code also require it be identified by a red switch plate.

102's comment is pretty funny with all the irony

Turn off the breaker for the furnace and blow out the pilot. Make sure to turn off the gas to be safe. When it gets cooler in the home, turn everything back on until it warms up again.

you could have used the emergency shut off switch.

If 10 F (-6C for us Canadians) and a foot of snow stopped us from having repair men come to our house, we would be screwed from September to May. I WALKED to school (5 years ago) in at least 5 feet of snow and weather down to -35 F. At -40 they closed the schools. It's gotten colder than -60 F where I live.
