Today, I casually mentioned to my dad that it was the Chinese New Year yesterday. He accused me of insulting his intelligence by "making stupid shit up." I explained that it's real, and that we just use the Gregorian calendar, hence the different dates. He responded by grounding me. FML

Seems your father was born during the year of the ass.

I've learned to just laugh and walk away. You really don't win with them, no matter what age. However tempting it is to see how stupid they are, they'll just take it to the next level.

I sincerely hope you're not Chinese.

I really don't know what to think of nearly every comment so far calling the father dumb and ignorant. He is from Texas and probably doesn't care about the Chinese calender. Not caring doesn't mean ignorance.

#47- But everyday there's a new thing comin' The ways of an oriental view And though op's dads in the lone star state people don't seem to care, were talkin' bout China Grove?

ignorance, noun: Lack of knowledge or information. I think "ignorant" is the perfect word to use here.

Wouldn't not caring be intentionally remaining ignorant.

Yeah ignorant actually is the right word in this context, but I think a lot of the people here using the term ignorant do mean it to be the same as stupid, but it actually isn't. Like you said it just means not having knowledge about something. You could however fully comprehend it if you were made aware of that knowledge. Being stupid just means you actually have low intelligence. Having said that I think the dad here is both ignorant AND stupid. Yes he just might not care much about every other nation on earth. That alone isn't a big deal. There are far too many things out there for any of us to know a lot about all of them. What makes him dumb though is the fact that he seriously thinks his kid is lying when he mentions it, and goes so far as to even punish the child instead of checking for himself. I didn't realize it was the Chinese New Year either until my fiancee mentioned it to me earlier, but when she did I didn't for one second think she was "making stupid shit up." Just because I didn't know what day it was myself doesn't mean she was wrong or lying.

Technically, it still means ignorant.

You are ignorant to the meaning of ignorant.

except he accused OP of making stuff up

These specific FMLs are way to common...

So you're under 18, right? Then it's your fault. It's always the kid's fault. Even when a 9 year old child with a very bad anxiety disorder is assaulted by a stranger for screaming to get out of a store because she's going to have a panic attack, she deserved it. She needed discipline. They'll take your kids away for anything now.

Your dad sounds like a real winner OP, hopefully you aren't stuck with that lack of intelligence much longer

If you are familiar with eastern culture you should follow the rule of helping those who "outrank" you from being or feeling uncomfortable.. Helping them save face... He may not be versed in such matters, but he does something to put food on the table and clothes on your back. Never forget that.

58 - Good point. To put it another way, OP could save his dad's face and his own ass by learning when to back off. Ignorance plus stubbornness should be handled with care, or it blows up.

Raking in money from a job doesn't really have any correlation here. Stupidity and ignorance are inexcusable, regardless of income.

Well I am quite certain there is an area of expertise, where ops father would exceed others... this knowledge has little practical value.

RedPillSucks 31

@Shadow_Phantom one does have to tread carefully when the ignorant/stupid have authority over you
