Hopefully the painting was not of that person so you could find a new buyer
Why in the world did you start drawing before he made his offer? Seems almost like a YDI to me.
Might have been best discussing payment beforehand.
Discuss payments and get it in writing before doing work for people.
Damn I feel your pain and know exactly what that's like I did the same for one of my girlfriends co-workers and when it came time to pay for it she didn't even buy it. My advice ask for payment up front
Negotiate the price and maybe even ask for a percentage up front before you begin the work. Simples.
I work in the creative industry as well. I've also learned the hard way to negotiate terms before work. Also, with new clients, get everything in writing and demand half up front.
As an artist myself, I feel your pain. Jeez, how horrible!
He should have posted a picture of his drawing. So we could decide if it was worth a pack of cigarettes or not!!!

Please tell me you told him no, and went searching for a new buyer. Or at least keep it, you are proud of it after all!
yikes. now you have a new painting at least.
