We don't know how old OP's daughter is. If she's a little girl, of course OP hasn't told her yet what a period is. Cross-generational studies are showing that girls are getting them earlier and earlier.

In the mom's defense, my own mother talked to me about periods before mine started, as well as whatever my health class had to say about it (can't really remember that class), but it was still scary and somewhat unnerving when it started.

Poor girl. :( Maybe you should've told her about this? I know is awkward, but it's better for her than going through this. I knew what was going on and why it was happening but my mom never told me anything either. She never told me what to do, or even how to get blood out of clothes. That led to an embarrassing moment where I brought her a tampon and asked her what I should do. Not only did she laugh at me and not tell me what to do, but later, she just had to tell my sister. I can't imagine what it must've been like for OP's daughter. She was pretty smart though, she had the right idea. I admire that.
