Today, I found out I have to give my father-in-law back the football tickets he gave me for my birthday. Why? His girlfriend decided she wanted to go. He didn't get me a different gift. FML

No. If he were married to the OP's mother he would be her stepfather. He's her father-in-law; that means he's the father of the OP's spouse.

And unless the Father-in-Law marries the girlfriend, she doesn't move up to the rank of mother-in-law. She simply remains the OP's Father-in-law's girlfriend.

Oh be nice guys, it's not hard to understand, but I doubt everyone reads FML with their brains all tuned up to interpretation mode, and ready to go. It's easy to read this one and go 'hang on wwuuuutt?' It's not like it's a common thing to read (FIL + GF), and it just seems wrong at first if you're not really paying attention.
