Many times people steal from friends or loved ones because they expect forgiveness. perhaps he was too ashamed to ask for help. maybe he has a drug or other addictive habit. There's a reason you asked him to be your best man. Remind him how one acts through example and compassion.

Even if he is broke and is too ashamed to ask for help it doesn't make it okay to steal. If he has an addiction he needs to seek treatment. There is no reason why someone should steal from their best friend.

I doubt they have proof of the theft that will hold up in court. Missing cash is pretty much untraceable unless OP wrote down all the serial #s

I really don't think it should matter "why he did it." He stole money from people who trusted him. People who were his friends. Personally, if I were OP, I'd probably cut ties with him. What else is the guy doing that OP doesn't know about? I guess that's harsh but I can't stand thieves/liars.

You should totally call him out in front of everyone at the wedding. Embarass the shit out of him. Yes, I know this would probably be tactless or trashy...but then again, so is stealing from your best friend. That sucks, OP. I hope you can find some legal way to make him pay you back or get him punished for what he's done.
