Today, I found out my grandpa died. As I rushed home crying to comfort my parents, I got pulled over for speeding. The officer told me to cut out the "fake" tears". When I told him my grandpa just died he tacked on another $100 for lying to an officer. Worst. Christmas. Ever. FML

so go to appeals court with the death certificate and at least get the 100 taken off

Except... you don't get fined for lying to an officer simply BECAUSE they can't know what's a lie and what isn't.

And the police wonder why people make fun of them.

Police officers don't set the amount that you're fined, and coming from a family with lots of police officers in various states, I've never heard of a law where you can get an extra fine tacked on for lying to an officer. All you have to do is go to court with a death certificate, or even a newspaper obituary or something from the funeral (like the memorial cards), to get the extra fine taken off. As for speeding, you shouldn't have done it, plain and simple. I'm very sorry that your grandfather died - my grandmother passed away last Christmas - but that doesn't mean you get to break the law.

I'm sorry dearie. My grandfather is slowly dying in the hospital and I'm sitting in the waiting room as we speak. It really does suck and it hurts. My condolences to you, bring the death certificate to traffic court and explain to the judge what's going on and he/she should have some amount of mercy on you. As for people saying you shouldn't be driving, it's hard to get a ride at that short of notice, let alone over distances on Christmas. I'm sorry once more -HUGGSSS-

I'm so very sorry to hear about your grandfather dying. That really sucks...my heart goes out to you and your family. I really do hope that the judge will give you a waiver on the extra $100 and make the cop apologize to you and your family. My thoughts and prayers go out to you and your family, and I hope you find comfort and peace this day.

I try, but it's mainly because a friend of mine lost his friend to gunfire yesterday.

53, DIAF. What would you do without "power hungry asshole cops" that help enforce traffic laws and keep the roads safe. I hope an uninsured or unlicensed motorist crashes into you and gives you a fake name and contact info. I'll bet you'll wish that a cop was there to issue citations and/or arrest them for you.

Asshole must have been pissed to be working on Christmas. I'd definately fight it in court.

sorry about your grandpa. Police can be idiots sometimes. Actually they do that a lot. Sometimes they can be helpful though.

I would definitely contest the $100, considering it wasn't a lie. However, speeding is speeding, and driving while you're crying is incredibly dangerous. In cases like this, take a taxi or public transportation, or wait a little until you're calm enough to drive. So a little FYL and a little YDI here.

The speeding ticket was definitely your fault, no matter what the circumstances. Is being home 5-10 minutes earlier going to help anything?
