OP, I know you weren't thinking clearly at the time, but you should really have somebody else drive you around when you're distraught. Well, take the death certificate and witnesses to court, and they'll get that $100 removed. It won't repeal the ticket, but at least it's something ("death doesn't absolve responsibility" and all that). Since the cop will likely have to testify as well, he'll have to receive and bear the full brunt of both his delinquency and lack of compassion, not that you should forgive him for it at all.
That's terrible. When my grandfather died last year January 2nd, I had just returned to school n couldn't be myself cuz I kept thinking of him. I guess so many people thought I had turned "emo" that the school police officer, principal, social worker, and all three counselors met me in a conference room in the office to report that a doctor from the rehab facility down the street was gunna have a visit with me to prevent any possible "self harm". People are either jerks about deaths or absolute idiots.... =.=
Appeal the extra $100 dollars because you weren't lying.
Get over it you have proof. As for the speeding, ydi. Period.

so go to appeals court with the death certificate and at least get the 100 taken off
Except... you don't get fined for lying to an officer simply BECAUSE they can't know what's a lie and what isn't.
