Hmm, is it just me, or do we live in a messed up society where not a soul thinks about how weird and cruel it is that a family member is left behind when the rest go on a trip to another country?! The cat is irrelevent and merely an excuse... killing/getting rid of the cat solves nothing.

Someone probably already said this, but cats are self sufficient. I don't know anyone that has to "take care of a cat" while their family goes on vacation. If your parents are in France, go somewhere with your friends and make sure you get back before your parents do. The cat will be fine.

Yeah, the cat should be fine, but personally I would give serious thought to giving ARL a call, simply because I think your parents deserve it.
