Today, I found out that my parents don't know the difference between a foreign person and a deaf person. They've been yelling at our exchange student for the past 2 days. FML

Today, I discovered the terrible things my parents say about my wife while visiting them. They speak in Arabic around us and I've never really been able to understand them. Guess who hasn't only brushed up on his Arabic, but spent the last 6 months teaching his wife… FML

Today, my mom scolded me for ruining my sister's "vacation" here. She just got deported from abroad, and was only gone for 2 months after falling for a marriage scam. Now she deludes to herself that she was born and raised there, and claims not to understand our mother tongue, calling it third world primate language. FML

Today, I realized the guy I like is not deaf. This would normally be good news. However, for the past two weeks I assumed he was deaf after seeing him use sign language. I've been openly talking about him within earshot. FML

Today, a deaf customer came to my work. In an attempt to connect with him I introduced myself in sign language. He just rolled his eyes and pointed at my name tag. FML

Today, I went to a drive through with my housemate. She got our order wrong and angrily yelled at the teenager who handed us our food, making her cry. My housemate can't fully speak English because of a learning disability, and she refuses to admit it. FML

Today, I realized my coworker can't comprehend English, or any other language. When I mentioned this to a coworker, they accused me of being an ableist. This is the same person who insults him to his face, knowing he can't understand her. FML

Been a common misconception for decades at least, especially among Americans: anyone will understand English if it's spoken slowly, clearly, and loudly. This is often followed by an attempt to speak pidgin English with a foreign accent corresponding to the other person's language, e.g. "You likee cake-ee?" (for "Would you like some cake?") if the other person is, or appears to be, Chinese.

If you speak slowly enough with body language, a lot of people even with only a basic knowledge of English will get what you're saying. But I don't understand why people think being louder will help. -_- Obviously volume is not the issue. My mom did the same thing to my French exchange student and I had to keep reminding her that she could hear perfectly fine. But it's not just Americans, several people did this to me when I was an exchange student in France and Germany. :P

You don't know the the difference between a hearing person and a deaf person. It doesn't matter how much you scream a deaf person is no going to hear you.
