First, it's his money to do with as he sees fit. You're not married so you have no claim unless you're living together and/or have children. Second, if he wanted to keep it "secret" then he clearly didn't want you to know. We now know that it was because it involved a trip without you. Seems to me he was trying to spare you the hurt of feeling left out or to spare himself of making it all about you. Third, unless he made a hint/suggestion that it was for an engagement ring...you shouldn't have allowed yourself to think it was. It's not only presumptuous, but also rude and awkward. You may be ready for that next step but he might not be and to put ANY sort of pressure/expectations on him isn't right.
