Today, I found out why my parents have been trying to convince me not to go to college this year. I also found out where the $20,000 they just spent on landscaping came from. My college fund. Which is now $0. FML

My dad did that. He said the money was for "college or emergencies". I guess that emergency was a vintage car that sits in the garage collecting dust. @57: OP never said they weren't paying for anything. 20k would pay for, what, a year? He could use that year to work to save up money to pay for the next 3 years. If the parents can help, then why not? The world is expensive.

Oh boo ******* hoo, why should they pay for you to go to college anyway? The majority of people who study never go into a graduate job. In Britain we pay for our own courses. Stop being such a lazy mooching ass and go to college anyway, if you really care then you'll do well and get a great job, making the debt worth it. Otherwise stop bitching and get your McDonalds application form now you waster.

Many necessities are free here, but post-secondary eduction is not. It is, however, significantly cheaper than in the US. One semester at Sir Wilfred Grenfell College (a division of Memorial University of Newfoundland, a provincial university) with 5 courses costs 1411$, including Student Union fees etc. If the OP searches around, they may not be able to go to their 1st choice college, but there are many affordable programs with reknown quality around the country.

Lol!! Unfortunately, post-secondary is not free here. :

only scottish citizens get free tuition. anyone else (including other members of the united kingdom, whose taxes pay for these establishments) have to pay the full amount. makes me sick.

in russia, you pay the equivilent of £500 a year in tuition, and you get it free if you get good enough grades in school. my parents should have hothoused me to learn russian =.="

The only place in the world that has free university for all right now is Finland. And that's only until 2010, I believe.
