Give them time! They are probably just intimated and scared! But just give it some time...they will eventually come around. You just keep doing what you are there for! Saving lives of other people! Your colleagues will eventually come around. I know it's difficult, but look at it this way...you are not only saving lives, but you are also an amazing role model!
Their loins are on fire.
My Uncle is a retired firefighter. He's a racist, sexist, homophobic S.O.B. who used to drink like a fish and still smokes like a chimney and spent most of his 40 years of marriage cheating on his wife until he got too old sick and ugly to keep doing it all. He was forced to retire early, ostensibly, because he refused to learn to speak french. More likely, everyone finally got sick of the guy.
And the relevancy....?
'Male Firefighter' #65. What law said they needed relevancy to comment anyway. So sick of these people who make it thier mission to be Judge, jury and executioner in the comments section.
Oh wow, that must be a very hard life you're living... No, but seriously, I understand what you're saying. I don't know why people always look for more if a person is being friendly and outgoing.
It's called male entitlement
1. Know your trucks better than the guys do 2. Don't take any shit 3. Have a sense of humor I've been a female firefighter for nearly ten years, luckily I wasn't the first at my department, but the three things above have helped me immensely. Good luck!
Agreed. Also, if you remove your gender from what defines you as a person, particularly in male-dominated fields, you'll have no problem getting along with the opposite sex (however, it did become a problem when guys started confiding in me about a female coworker they wanted to boink).
Just because you can ignore your own gender doesn't mean that others will sadly
I feel like I'm reading the plot of the early episodes of Chicago Fire.
No one cares
I guess its a good thing for the fire fighters that they work in a male dominated world. I wonder what kind of living hell their wives would put them through if they worked in a job where a lot if not most of their co-workers were women. Insecure wives/GFs are a pain in everyone's butt.
Men who can't take a woman seriously just because she's a woman are a pain in everyone's butt.
I would never hit on my sisters. Come work with me!

Look on the bright side! You must be attractive if coworkers hit on you or ignore you because of their wives.
I feel that pain OP! So many people are like "oh stop complaining that people like you." Well it's ****** difficult when you can't maintain any real friends. Sorry OP :(
