Today, I got a call from a police department saying that if I didn't move my car from a store's parking lot within the next 15 minutes, they were going to tow it and charge me for the fee. I was at work and the reason I parked it there is because it started smoking and almost caught fire. FML

Why would you leave your car in a random parking lot while it's all smokey and go to work? shouldn't you have called a tow company or your insurance or something. really now Ydi

It's private property... only a representative of the property should be able to authorize a tow unless it's evidence in a crime or parked in a fire lane.

And Snickerdoodles needs to stay away from the grown up FMLs... Work comes first or you can't pay the repair bills for the car trouble. Car trouble should be ocassionally expected and dealt with on your own time -So as to not disrupt the entire work place.

I'm curious as to why you left it in a random lot? And it seems kind of weird that a big department store would notice one car in their parking lot.

Oops. My bad. I read it wrong. Still, you could've went inside and asked the owner/manager if you could leave your car there because it broke down. A lot of stores will tow your car if you're not a customer and rightfully so. YDI. You had better options.

not every job allows you to just decide to skip the morning's work in the last minute to go to the carshop instead.

When her car started smoking, she was driving to work. She wasn't there yet, but she was near the parking lot of some store. Because she didn't want her car to catch fire, she stopped driving it, and found another way to get to work.

And OP probably would have gotten in trouble if she hadn't gone to work.

Thank you mellow, I've been told to go die in a hole before. Guess what I did, I laughed at the person. But if your gonna bitch about me tellin the op to go die for leaving his car to burn and expecting the cops to do something..... then you can go shove a stick up your ass and have a beaver chew it out.

Something useful about the car. Op should know that cops don't normally help in situations where you leave a vehicle somewhere without the landowners consent.

Because "I had car troubles I'm sorry I'm late." is infinitely times worse than "hey my car is on fire! I'm just going to kinda park it right here and deal with the problem later."

i call fake... if you parked at a store, and the store didnt like it, they would call their tow company to take your car away. Even if they did call the police, which they wouldnt, the police wouldnt be wasting their time with an inappropriately parked car (because thats what the towing companies are for!). But, lets say for arguments sake, they were willing to waste their time... where the hell did they get your number? unless you have a recent criminal record, or they went to the trouble of tracking down the nearest relative so that they could ask for your work number... i think you see my point?
