Depends on how you save them the money. I've been working corporate many years, and sometimes when an idea seems like a really good one, it could pose as an liability to the company and can cause them millions if something went wrong.

The two events probably have nothing to do with each other. It's more likely you were fired in spite of your money saving efforts. Sorry OP, it is unfortunate to do something positive and still end up losing your job. The only way I can see the savings being a direct factor to your termination is if the change damaged a relationship the company held that was important to them.
Uncovering a "special relationship," like a $6,000+ kickback, was my first thought.
