I can't help myself, so I'm asking for forgiveness in advance. First of all, yeah, your mother should not even have her phone on when she's driving. In an emergency, it's easy enough to turn on, and if it's impossible to turn on for whatever reason, most likely HAVING it on won't make a whole lot of difference. Just to be clear, though: YOU did not get into a minor traffic accident. Your mother did. You were just lucky enough to be in the car with her. But most of all, sounds like all of you are OK -- cars are easier to repair than people. Glad it wasn't worse!

If she really had to check her phone and was willing to do it while driving you should have checked her phone for her
