Just because your engine was rebuilt doesn't mean every little piece was replaced. You could have bad sensors or something.
The CEL doesn't necessarily have anything to do with the actual engine, and in most cases it doesn't. Take it to an advance auto or an auto zone or something like that and get them to scan the codes for you. Most common case of CEL is not having the gas cap on right. Also - if the techs never cleared the codes out after the last time the job was done then it could easily just still be there. Get an auto store to scan it, google the code they give you and see what it says. A bit of self education can go a long ways.
Should've bought a unimog. The check engine light could be anything from a misfire to a faulty sensor.
