Why today? If anything this attitude is old fashioned, it's not a new thing. However there used to be such a strong social stigma against divorce and restrictions like women not being able to open a bank account without a man's signature. The reason people get divorced more nowadays is women can finally stand up to this kind of behaviour and leave if they choose, which is something the OP should bear in mind! This kind of thing used to happen in the good old days just behind closed doors! I think things are better nowadays because at least women can speak out!
