Hi, as the author I just wanted to clear this up. I'm not cold or heartless, but I forgot my Oyster card (what you need to get a bus home in England) and had given my last bit of change for the tip! I was hugely embarrassed as I always tip (although not mandatory in Britain as in America; mostly because American staff are for more helpful and nice). However, as I do go there fairly often, I will obviously tip more next time!

I'm a former waitress living in the UK, I did that for four years trying to save enough money to be able to continue studying. It is true that servers get minimum wage, but in places like London it is almost impossible to make a living working less than 55 hours a week on that salary, and definitely there is an expectation of complementing the salary with tips (usually around 8-10%) in return for an attentive service. Obviously, if the service is shit things are different.
It's not mandatory to tip in the US. I never tip. IDC how much you do or don't make you are already getting paid to do your job. Don't like what you make and don't like relying on tips ? Get a better job. Problem solved.
Careful what you ask for, some folks have no problem with being blunt and literal
