You know, they do sell alcohol on planes. Knock back a few cocktails and the flight, as well as life itself, will become wonderful. At least until you sober up. Sorry your plan to purchase your girlfriend's affection with expensive travel failed. :(

I would think it wasn't a plan to purchase her affection so much as it was intended to make the event a truly romantic and memorable one. He clearly did not expect a negative answer or he would not have even asked.

I think it was meant as OP should have at least talked to his gf about it before randomly popping the question. If they had had a few conversations beforehand, he would have known how she felt about marriage and could have easily avoided this.
