Today, I jokingly asked my boyfriend to marry me, because it's a leap year. He is now avoiding me for fear that I was serious. FML

That would be awesome to only have to remember your anniversary every 4 years

that's messed up, you don't joke about something like that

His fight or flight instinct kicked in!

He wanted to ask you instead you asking him.

. You were fishing to see what he would say. He said no. Time to move on.

If I remember my tradition correctly "leap day" is the only day women was allowed to asked the guy to marry her. If he said no then he owed her either a set of gloves or a silk gown.

You are right. Or money or fabric for skirts. And it wasn't just in Ireland. Scotland had a law for it and it was in Denmark also.

So you're saying I can ask complete strangers to marry me and demand money or clothing if they don't? Though that might backfire a bit...

Marry you because it's a leap year? That statement confuses me.

First of all, no one should ever fake a proposal. It can **** with other persons feelings, and make them question many deferent aspects of your relationship. And second of all, if he knew you were joking it shouldn't bother the guy one bit. So you should probably question his motives regarding your relationship with him. And if there's a chance you could just be paranoid, then wait the situation out and see if he has an explanation for you.
