I would of told them to f off
I dont understand how your work "wouldn't let you call in sick" it's not up to them. That's the whole point of calling in sick. Grow a spine and stand up for yourself. Get a doc cert and sue if they fire you!
The day care I used to work in also had this policy, it's written on the contract you sign. You may not take sick days off no matter what, you must show up and finish your shift. I was 8months pregnant with a stomach virus, I was in the bathroom several times that day and all they could say was "we will see how busy it is by noon and if any children get picked up early if not we're sorry but you have to stay." :/
Get a medical note.
Are you Sirius
Go in sick, coughing and hacking, with a doctor's note about what you have. Problem solved.
Well you probably can't call in cause you used all your off days already , you could and get penalized. But maybe a doctors note would suffice ? Or a hospital check in . Sorry OP .
Trust me I've been there, not quite there but close. They don't care about the children and there health if it means finding a substitute for a day or more

And then I bet they'll also say "WHY DID YOU COME INTO WORK SICK? THINK OF THE CHILDREN!!"
That's a great way to run a company, don't think about the workers or the customers
