Today, I learned why my bathroom has a horrible, seemingly irremovable stench. My cat doesn't squat to pee like a normal cat. She stands up, peeing over the side of the litter tray all over the wall and floor, which are now a permanent yellow tinge. FML

Yah, that's called spraying. Is your cat fixed? If not, this could be why. Also, this could be a sign of a medical issue such as a Urinary Tract Infection. You need to get your cat fixed if it isn't, and see a vet.

First, your cat may be a boy, they tend to do this more often. Second, get it fixed if it's not. Third, have the vet run a profile for a urinary tract infection. Fourth, get a litter box with a hood on it. Fifth, wash the walls. Try Greased Lightning, I know it works well on dog pee-you can get it cheaply at dollar stores. Sixth, don't just paint over it...it will still stink.

Actually, oddly enough, female cats do spray. She could possibly have a problem, perhaps a urinary tract infection, as mentioned, or she just needs to be spayed, but sometimes even after you spay a cat, they continue to spray because it's just too late.

my cat does the EXACT same thing...

Your cat isn't "missing" the litter box. Your cat is marking territory which, yes, females cat also do.

My kitty misbehaves when he has a UTI. the ONLY time he misbehaves. and a covered kitty box would help this problem. they have cute igloo types at petsmart. they also help with the tracked kitty litter problem :)

cats hate dirty litter boxes...try cleaning it once and awhile.

I agree with a lot of these comments... get a covered litter box. Wash the wall with a baking soda paste... if it's really hard to get out, cover the nasty spot with the baking soda paste and let it sit overnight, then wash it off the next day. Get your cat fixed if she isn't already. Are you sure this is the only place in your house she's spraying? You may need to get an enzyme cleaner (from the pet store) to be sure the smell is completely gone... if she can still smell where he sprayed, she'll do it again in the same spot. Make sure you scoop the litter box at least every other day, and clean the box out thoroughly once a month (that means wash it).
