Okay but if the persons crazy, just decline and block them.
They have changed the policy. There is no "decline" anymore, it's only remove request. The person will see that their request is no longer pending approval, but they are also unable to resend a new request once you remove it.

Just unfriend or block them. Simple as that.
I'm actually not sure why this is even FML-worthy, considering how incredibly easy this is to fix. It's like stubbing your toe; yeah, it sucks momentarily, but it's better a few seconds later.

Well, lucky for you there's an unfriend/unfollow option. You might want to use the block button on the ex though. Just as a precaution.
