Today, I lost my dog and so I put up 'lost' signs. As I was coming back home I noticed one had been written on. It said: "Found your dog. Keeping it". FML

Microchipping won't do much if the dog has been stolen. Though I suppose there's an off chance they might take it to the vet and someone recognizes it to scan the microchip.

If the dog is chipped, they can track him to whoever has him. and if he is chipped, OPs name will be on the paperwork. Proof it's OPs dog.

People can be pretty cruel when it comes to lost dogs. When I lost my dog I put up signs all over the neighborhood. I got a call from a man telling me they're graffiti and threatening to report us. I also had a friend make fun of me and tell me that they ran over my dog. People are mean op, especially when they know that it's a soft spot for you. I highly doubt they really found your dog. Just keep looking.

Even if they file one, it probably wouldn't help. There's no way of knowing who wrote it or if they were even telling the truth. Even if there are cameras on the street, unless OP is someone very rich or very important the police wouldn't look much into a lost dog. All police ever do for that is go with you to the thief's house and tell them to give the dog back. Odds are as long as said thief didn't try to cause problems they wouldn't even get arrested.
