Today, I'm in the hospital and it's been 44 hours since I've eaten anything. My doctors won't let me eat and my parents are sitting across the room, eating. FML

That is really f*cked up. My bf was in the hospital for a month and couldn't eat. I stayed with him the whole time but instead of being a jerk like your parents I didn't eat in his room. I'm sorry but to me your parents are incredibly disrespectful.

Is it for surgery? I heard they won't let you eat anything because if you did, you might throw up while you were sedated and you would choke on your vomit. I'm sorry OP. I'd find it hard to just go 18 hours without eating! You're strong!

They do it because your muscles relax under general anesthesia so there's nothing from stopping food and stomach acids from coming back up and being aspirated. Your stomach acid can do some major damage to your lungs if inhaled.
