Today, I'm on vacation. I spent $4000 to surprise my boyfriend on a trip to Hawaii. We have been together over a year. Turns out, he hates the outdoors. He's mad at me for bringing him here and is upset at everything. He's in the room reading, I'm at the bar drinking $10 Mai Tai's. FML

You've been together over a year and you didn't know that he hates the outdoors? I gotta say YDI.

He seems like a jerk...any normal person would at least try to enjoy themselves when the significant other put in that much effort. Sorry, that sucks! On the upside you are in Hawaii!

#1 is an idiot. if you're still with your boyfriend, YDI. drop that ass in a publicly embarassing manner

Okay, so there's something to it for all the people who say your boyfriend should be grateful that you took him on vacation. But more than that, in an entire year you didn't find the basic info about your boyfriend that he doesn't like the outdoors. Surprises are all well and good, but you should have a decent sense of his taste before you spend that much money, because the same surprises aren't good for all people. Come on! An entire year! I've been interested in a girl for like 2 weeks and I know her better than that!

how you didn't realize such a freak in one year!

You should have taken me instead! Who could possibly hate Hawaii!?!?! And $4000 isn't cheap. He should be grateful.

I don't understand how people call the guy an asshole for not liking the beach. I know plenty of people who hate the beach, and I'm sure would hate it if someone they knew for a year and dated didn't know that in any way shape or form and wasted that much money.

#13 is on it. I'd be gutted if my partner of a year booked such a failure of a surprise holiday... good on you for making the effort, but if you don't know each other by now..! Probably best leave it.

Small gifts are fine as surprises, and large ones are fine too -- if you know for sure they'll want it. But an expensive surprise vacation? YDI.
