Today, I'm travelling to England for an important meeting. I'm Norwegian, and my name is Bård. I have to introduce myself as "bored" the whole day, because that's how my name is pronounced. FML

So then why didn't your parents consider Mandarin Chinese? Or why won't you consider Mandarin when naming your children, #27?

Why not just pronounce it as if it were in English, if only for the trip? I've been called "Ben-ha-meen" (Benjamin) by spanish speakers before, it really was not that big of a deal to me. And what about a nickname? Maybe go by a different name (middle or last)? Or as others have said, just say "my name is..." There's really way too many ways around this for it to be an FML.

Definitely agree. My name is Cheryl but I used to have a violin instructor who would always call me Sharon. It always bothered everyone else more than it bothered me. I just answered to it because I knew who she meant. Totally not an FML. Most people do understand that foreigners have different names and as long as you are telling them it's your name, there shouldn't be any problem.

Heheh, I would have put this in MLIA although I suppose it would get annoying after a while.

Just say your name is Bernard or something...

There is nothing wrong with your name... the problem is your brain. You are a ********... So what’s the problem introducing your self? Hi my name is Bård (pronounced bored) Who, with half a brain would just say "hi I’m bored", knowing the Connotation of the pronounced name??

Say your name proudly. Just because it sounds like something else in English is no reason to feel shame. A name that means Protection from strife is good manly name. Don't be a wank!

what's wrong with your name? I don't see a problem, and if you're that embarrassed then think up a simple nickname you can say instead of your name
