Today, I needed to pay off a $35 parking ticket. To try and get some sort of revenge, I went to the bank and got 3,500 pennies, dumped them into a bucket, and refused to pay with anything besides the pennies. They called the police. I was arrested and cited $147. FML

Ok so here is an update, they canceled my $147 fine because I was using 100% legal us tender. However in order to pay off the $35 in pennies they had to either be rolled by the bank or I had to count them 1 by 1, so I rolled 'em.

What on earth for? What did they cite you with? There's no violation of any law civil or criminal there...

A bucket full of pennies is a perfectly legitimate way to pay. They are legal tender. An idiotic way to pay would be like with sticks of gum.

Why do people do this? It's punishing the teller who didn't even give the ticket.

Legally they eitgee have to take it as it is currency or sign off that they no longer are charging you

U can probably fight that. They can't deny what form of payment u have as long as its US currency

In the US this violates the law. Because pennies are legal tender for all debts public and private they have to accept the payment. There are certain situations where thy can refuse change however this is not one of them.

you should tell them its illegal for them to deny legal currency

That was pretty stupid of you, but pennies are legal tender. Im sure they were supposed to have accepted it. However, maybe they called the police saying that you didnt want to pay at all.

That's not illegal... You should have been able to pay them with any national currency you chose, and you chose pennies.
