Today, I ordered a Diet Coke with my meal from a fast food restaurant. Turns out, they didn't give me diet. My blood sugar spiked and I was sick for hours later. I'm a diabetic. FML

That's awful. You should go to that place again and ask to speak to the person in charge. I kind of hope somebody gets fired for that, diabetes is really serious.

you're* :P. but yeah OP, you should have made sure, or stuck with water, better safe than sorry. My mom is diabetic and always makes sure, "diet, right? I'm diabetic." But water is much healthier anyway.. I hope you're all right though after that.

My roomate used to call diabetes the weak mans dissease to our 2 diabetic friends and now he has diaeties. Unless he was eating the salad then the fast food meal he ate could have been as big a factor in the spike as the coke... all the carbs unless it was within 30 min then prolly the coke.

not all diabetes is caused by things that a person does. i have diabetes and its genetic, weak mans disease? maybe not in all cases

#18, they probably have type 1 diabetes. I think you're thinking of type 2, which is made better with diet and excersize. But type 1 will be there forever. My brother has type 1 diabetes, and eats fast food. All he has to do is find the amount of carbs in the meal, and take the right amount of insulin.

I'm a type one diabetic and yeah fair enough most of the time i can tell, but sometimes i cant'. No offense but if someone had a nut allergy but then they were accidentally given nuts it would make them so ill and possible kill them and its the same for diabetics, so how can you blame this person? Diabetics can eat most things, provided we do the correct amount of insulin, so all these people who are acting as if they are an expert on diabetes and what we should and shouldn't eat haven't a clue. You wouldn't understand unless you yourself had to go through it"/

Oh jeez, that really sucks, OP, FYL. I'd go talk to the manager about that. It isn't that damn hard to give people the right drink.

you couls almost bring them in court

YDI. I'm diabetic too & you're obviously not very responsible with your care. You should have checked your blood sugar an hour after your meal or at least right when you started feeling sick. Then you would have been able to give yourself insulin to lower it. If you had given yourself the proper medication you wouldn't have "been sick for hours." Mistakes happen. I've been given regular soda before but I was able to check my sugars promptly after my meal & give myself insulin to prevent anything bad from happening. Diabetes is VERY manageable if you take care of yourself. There's no excuse to be sick for hours due to high blood sugar. It's the reason glucose monitors were invented.

I agree! He/she is obviously not very responsible! I don't have diabetes but I work in a field that requires me to take care of a few diabetics. These people are also diagnosed with mild mental retardation and even they know what they can and can't eat!

As bad as I feel for the OP, I kind of agree. KIND OF. My dad pretty much keeps his diabetes in check, because he works out very frequently, so he doesn't check his insulin levels anymore. He hasn't done so in over a year. Partly because he can tell. I wouldn't say OP deserves it, but the difference in taste is obvious. I don't drink more than one can of soda a month, but I can always tell when I go to a place where they fill my drink and it's not regular Pepsi(Coke's not as sweet, so I have a harder time). OP doesn't deserve it, but if he took proper care of himself mistakes like this wouldn't make him that sick.

Are you stupid, Op. My best friend is diabetic, she has to plan before she can go to fast food joints, because blood sugar, diet, and her exercise plan can be screwed up if she eats or drinks the wrong thing. Op deserved this because they TEACH you what you can and cannot eat as a diabetic. Unless Op was just going for a soda and they messed that up, he shouldn't have been eating fast food without checking his blood sugar before and after. Also, how stupid do you have to be to lie on the couch for hours being sick. Wouldn't he have thought "I am diabetic, they might have screwed up my soda, time to check my blood sugar." If that didn't work, he should have gone to the doctors. Depending on how long Op has been Diabetic, they should have either known better or taken the initiative to figure out what is wrong. When you are sick, yea it sucks but don't be a pig and eat whatever. Make sure you are healthy. I mean hell, Op, its only your health.

That's right.. And plus diet drinks are worse that regular drinks! I think OP just wants some one to feel sorry for him/her.. OP you're prolly diabetic bc you're over weight. Try weight watchers instead of mcdonalds!!

the fact that you think that all diabetes is weight and diet related shows how uneducated you are.

And holy cow, people. This is nothing to throw a lawsuit about. It happens a LOT.
