I'm sorry but I don't understand how this is an FML with so little detail. How long have you been dating? How old are you both? I think it is perfectly acceptable to ask your mother for advice, he probably didn't want to hurt you, therefore; making him a gentleman, not a jerk. I am not voting either way as there is not enough information but from what I do have it would be a YDI as everyone who gets broken up with deserves to have it done at least respectfully and honestly.

Wow, everyone is assuming the worst. What if the dude said "Mom, I need I break up with my girlfriend but want to be as kind as possible. How would you, as a woman, want to get the news?" Come on. That's a caring individual right there. Sucks that she overheard, but that alone doesn't make him an asshole.
