maybe she was really horrible to your girlfriend. I know I've had that problem before and usually the son's eyes are completely closed to it (by choice).
I completely agree with you. My mother in law is the worst and my husband does not see it at all. Maybe the mother was a complete bitch to the gf. With the way my mother in law treats me I would say the same thing not around him but I would still say it. She most likely didn't mean for him to hear.
