Today, I realized that when my dad said he would pay for my college, he really meant that he was going to forge my signature on a student loan in my name and not make payments on it. FML

I don't know how close you are to your dad, but that's a serious crime and you should be making a police report.

You shouldn't have your parents pay your way threw college! Your a big kid put your big kid pants on and pay for it yourself!

Maybe it was an offer instead of expected? Some people's parents have the money to help out their children.

not all kids have enough money to pay for tuitions and books l, they will always need a hand through life.

College is extremely expensive. Even with loans you're in debt for years. If the parent offers and is able to help pay then there's nothing wrong with that. You can't expect a kid to suddenly grow up and do EVERYTHING on their own once they hit 18. Yes they eventually need to make their own living without mommy and daddy, but it's hard to do that right away without a little help.

Um... #31, many people can't afford college on minimum wage.

31-It's through. I would agree that OP should not expect Daddy to pay for college. But the key word here is expect. If OP's dad offered than there is no reason to not accept it. Is there?

You know, I really hate these "OMG your parents don't HAVE to pay for your college," comments. Sure, they legally don't have to, but it's the morally right thing to do. When you choose to have a child you choose lots and lots of costs and expenses that come with one. Sure, money is tight seeing as I have 3 siblings and divorced parents, but my parents are making college a priority seeing as I'm going off soon enough. My mom isn't just going to screw me over as soon as I turn 18 because she'd rather keep money for herself. If parents are financially able to, they most definitely should pay for their child's tuition. I think it is selfish to NOT assist your child in getting a good education. It happened to my mom and she has STILL not paid off her law school debts. But that's just me :P

^I agree with you. Luckily, my parents are on the same boat as well.

31 looks like she's still a little girl, and probably has no idea what she's talking about. In maybe 6-4 years, when she's going through college herself (IF she even does), she'll be singing a different tune.

Wow. College is expensive, in case you didn't know. My parents paid for all of my siblings' university tuition fees and they turned out good and independent regardless.

Yo thats messed up. You should prank him hehehehe

This could ruin OP's life. Retaliation should be much, much more than a mere prank. Getting the law involved would be a good start.

Curious, if OP is a minor, he may not be legally bound to this contract. OP should check out legal options

I'm pretty sure that if OP contests it and files a police report saying it wasn't him they won't be able to be legally hold him responsible, minor or not. Douchebag Dad might go to jail though. And the loan officer will probably get shitcanned.

I'm surprised he was able to get one. To get a loan like that the document needs to be notarized, meaning he has to provide identification that matches the signature to prove its his, to prevent situations exactly like this.

Why should your dad pay for your education suck it up cupcake get a job and pay for yourself

Sweetpea22 14

Yep, minimum wage will totally pay for college, right?

Like others have said, maybe OP's dad offered. And you make it sound like it's really easy to find work. Either way even if OP did have a job (that is if he doesn't already have one), if college in the US is anything like uni/college here (Australia) then I doubt it would be enough to pay for it.

47- You are unbelievably condescending. This semester my tuition was about 6 grand and my books were about 500 dollars. I make 7.25 an hour that's almost 900 hours I'd need to work for one semester, not to mention other necessities such as food, rent, bills, etc. factor in the fact that I have class all day three days a week, plus a shit load of homework, that limits the time I can work. You are a complete idiot, "cupcake". Your terrible grammar and lack of punctuation suggest that you're not getting much of an education anyway, so what would you know?

Sweetpea22 14

To all you idiots saying "OMG get a job and pay for your own college" You must be privileged since the job market is still shitty and not many people can live off of let alone pay for college on minimal wage

You and your 'minimum wage' kick. There ARE jobs that require no experience that pay higher than minimum wage.

Sweetpea22 14

Not in my town or a lot of places. Many people can't even GET jobs, so how are they going to pay for college

What a troll... That's horrible though...and a bit off hope you get it paid off and don't have to withdraw another one with him doing the same...

If you are going to take legal actions on this matter on thing you could do is have the way your dad signed your name and how you sign your name brought to a specialist 9 out of 10 times they can prove that its not the same. plus there are bound to be finger prints on the loan from when he signed it. I doubt the bank put it through a washer so prints should still be there.

Alternatively OP could just demand video evidence that he was indeed the one in the loan officer's office/desk that day. Much cheaper and easier.

That is true. But atleast I came up with a logical answer.

To be honest to all these people who say "parents aren't expected to pay for college" if that said parent is claiming that child for taxes and then the kid has to report their parents income on the FAFSA cause they are being claimed then yes I think the parents should pay. That right there determines just how much a child gets for financial aid. Now if the parent doesn't want to pay for college, they should no longer claim them as dependents that way the kid can fill out the FAFSA without the parents info.

It's even worse when the student can't afford to live on their own. I had this exact problem. Where I live the only way I can get out of this is if I get married or have a baby, or wait until I'm 26, and being 21 at the moment, I'm not terribly inclined to do either.

I feel your pain. Sometimes it seems like an accomplishment just to not **** up your life by making the wrong decisions. Don't let anyone bully you into making life decisions you are not ready for, especially if they're family.
