Don't steal. Tell him you need his help and that it would make mommy very proud and that you'll pay him back. Set an example.
That's depressing. Get a real.job, go bacl to school do whatever it takes and get your life back on track.
If your 8-year-old has enough money to pay the bills and you don't, you seriously need to rethink how you spend your money. Your kid needs you to be the responsible one!
Not everyone makes enough money to be able to set some aside for emergencies. If OP had a sudden expense come up like a car or appliance break down or a medical emergency all of their funds may have had to go to that. I remember lending money to my mother occasionally for a small thing she needed to buy but because of something unexpected we were short that month. It happens but doesn't mean someone is irresponsible
Technically its kinda really illegal for parents to take their kids money from them and they can get seriously in trouble for it
Surely it would only be illegal if the kid had earned the money while working a job? Considering this boy is 8 years old, I'm assuming it's pocket money/birthday money etc. While it would definitely be horrible and immoral for a parent to take their child's money, I don't think it would be illegal.
Technically it really is NOT illegal. Anyone under the legal age can't actually legally own anything. So, any money owned or made by the kid is 'technically' property of the parents. There is only one way to change that, a child can claim early emancipation at a judge, but as far as I know, this is only done on very rare occasions. There have been several such cases with very famous kid stars where the parents had spent all their money. California enacted the Child Actor's bill for this very reason, but as far as I know, most other states/countries don't have that.
Was that money saved for a college fun or perhaps his future if so that's low, if not then hey gotta do what you gotta do he will understand later in life.
Never steal. Let him know the issue. Trust is very difficult to earn back especially from a child who trusts YOU, their parent, explicitly.
For the consumables they could have been there before this month. Maybe they had an unexpected expense such as needing a new car. Should they sell their junk food and alcohol back to the store? It doesnt work like that. Also, cable is paid a month in advance. So you pay for say July's cable in June. So they could have had the money for June, but not july but will have the cable in july due to paying in advance.
The kid is eight, it sucks I know. But bills come first. If you have to sit your kid down and explain what happened. Explain what would have happened if you didn't pay bills. When I was little we didn't get Christmas presents because my mom couldn't afford it. And she explained to us sadly and we all (3 kids) just smiled and said it was okay as long as we were together we can celebrate. We made each other things that year with paper and stuff. Your kid will understand don't underestimate there power of understanding at a young age

You need to provide. Money can be replaced later.
Been there before. Several times! I always pay them back though
