Today, I received an email from my professor asking me not to jump ahead on assignments as it makes the other students look bad. FML

Forward it to the dean, see what he thinks.

Clearly someone who can organize and plan things ahead of time so op isn't missing out on anything, doesn't have any nasty surprises, doesn't use any old excuse in the book to avoid doing the work & doesn't possibly forget an assignment that could have a major impact on their grade. Or perhaps op just likes to study. I used to love doing English essays. I'd sit there with my dictionary and thesaurus, write, edit & re-write them. People have their academic quirks.

Working ahead has its pitfalls though, as you get ahead of the lectures and may not correctly understand the content from your studies without them. I had a friend who did the same and very nearly failed because of her over eagerness. She misunderstood a concept, did the work in advance, turned it in and ended up begging to be able to rewrite it after it was graded, so that she could keep her scholarship.

He's right, but his reasoning is poor. The real reason you shouldn't jump ahead is that it makes it hard on the graders, whether it's the professor himself or his grad students. It's much more efficient to grade everybody's work at once, for instance, if you see many people miss the same problem, you know that you need to cover it again in class.

you're not doogie howser md so just chill.... follow the lesson plan and if you're so smart then take a more advanced class of help with tutoring.

I say keep what you're doing OP! If other people can't handle you being intelligent then they either should challenge themselves more or drop out.

Fast doesn't equal intelligent. OP could be way ahead, but a solid c student.

OP, where do you go to college? Usually professors encourage you to work ahead, so just keep doing what you've been doing. And to those who are criticizing OP for doing this, since when is it bad to plan ahead and get work out of the way? For all we know, OP could be a science major and have tons of readings, assignments, and lab reports to complete, so he would need to work ahead.

But it makes you look better! I say just keep doing what you're doing.

Why does everybody assume that because OP is working ahead he must be doing great, working faster does not always give you a better result. Prof was probably just joking when he said it makes the other student look bad, he just doesn't want people messing with his schedule or was trying to be nice not telling op he isn't helping himself by working ahead...

By your logic the prof should be too busy marking papers and grading assessments to be making jokes... I don't think he'd be the kind of person to put "JK" on the bottom of the email.. Op could be doing splendidly & the prof doesn't want the responsibility of looking after a paper handed in early in case something happens to it. What is it this generation says.... "Haters gonna hate"?.....

How very insightful of you to see 'my' logic in 3 sentences. You must have worked ahead a lot in college which let to this Superior power of deduction, because it is so accurate!!

No, 53, I in actual fact didn't even graduate high school. I had a nervous break down halfway through my final year, was hospitalised and was unable to graduate. So I proceeded to get myself a job, 3 actually, 1 part time and the other 2 regular casual. My powers of deduction are apparently no match for your powers of sarcastic deflection, so I take my hat off to you sir & wish you good day. ....... DILLIGAF.....

Nobdy asked for your life story, geesh.
