Today, I rented a car that has a smart key. The proximity of the key determines if the doors will unlock. I went to a meeting and returned to the car with the trunk popped open and all my luggage gone. The rental company decided to store a spare key in the glovebox for safekeeping. FML

Same thing happened to my family when we went to Disney for a week. EXCEPT they didn't steal it.

This isn't possible, for reasons others have stated. You just didn't lock the car properly.

A smart key is like the newer model cars where you don't have to use the key in an ignition switch...as long as it is in the car, you push the button while holding the brake in and it will start. Another feature of the smart key, is that it is IMPOSSIBLE to lock the doors while the key is inside the car. Well, as long as the key inside works. Anyway, YDI for not realizing that even though you pushed the lock button (probably) that the doors did not in fact lock. Always check to make sure the doors locked, especially in an unfamiliar vehicle.

There is no lock button, that's what a smart key is: when you leave the car the doors lock automatically. And you can't check whether they have or not because when you walk back up to the car with your key in your pocket or hand the doors unlock!

they should have told you, but I have a car with a smart key. if the key is in the car it won't lock and it beeps at you to let you know the key is inside. it prevents you from locking your keys in the car. the car was probably beeping but with it being a rental she probably didn't know why.

you are an idiot for not checking if the doors would lock in the first place besides, your story is false anyway as pointed out

cars always have two keys... you should have asked about the second...
