Today, I rented some movies in attempts to cheer up my best friend. Her husband just died a few weeks ago in a helicopter accident. I was in a rush and didn't read the descriptions of the two films, one was about a plane crash where all the passengers died. She cried through the entire movie. FML

you inconsiderate person. you should have chosen something you had already seen that you thought could cheer her up instead of a random movie.

This is exactly the same as some other one almost word for word

I hope you feel guiltier than ****. YDI. Why wouldn't you read the descriptions?!?!?! You were in a rush? Really? To buy movies? I suggest you jump off a cliff.

She won't be talking to you again. YDI.

And you didn't take the movie out... why? WTF dude? Seriously. You should have just rented a couple of comedies that EVERYONE knows is going to be funny, and went from there... DAMN you weren't thinking...

Never, ever, ever play defense. It just makes you into an insincere bastard. Apologize, but don't distract. Grieving is a weird yo-yo process of ignoring the pain and confronting the pain in an alternating fashion. You have to take it in little pieces to be able to get through it, but you can't ignore it forever or it screws you up in weird ways. You've accidentally forced her to deal with it. Apologize, hold her close, and help her deal with it. DO NOT try to change the subject or act like it didn't happen. It DID happen, and it's your fault, so you'd better bare-face it. Your friend has enough to deal with without having to worry about your embarrassment. Offer to go get a different movie and tell her she should pick it this time, on your dime. And buy her some take-out. (I think the other posters are a bit... hyperbolic. "Jump off a cliff?" Give me a break.)
